It’s not very often that a show comes along that really grabs my attention. However, the other day I was off and was unable to find anything on the over 2000 choices for stations and movies that I had at my fingertips, so I did what anyone would do and I started to scroll through Netflix. It was then that I came across a show that I had heard about, but never sat down to watch: The Magicians.
Based upon Lev Grossman’s best-selling books, The Magicians centers around Brakebills University, a secret institution specializing in magic. There, amidst an unorthodox education of spellcasting, a group of twenty-something friends soon discover that a magical fantasy world they read about as children is all too real— and poses grave danger to humanity.
The best way to describe to describe The Magicians is Harry Potter, meets The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, and they are all college aged kids. It has all the excitement of the Potter-verse and the adventure of the Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, but with an adult spin.
I absolutely love The Magicians, its fantastically written and has an awesome story within a story story-line going, that leaves you wanting more. Then there is the fact that finger tutting, a style of dance that involves making shapes and sharp angles with one’s hands and arms, very much like the Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics, is what is used to bring their magic to life, makes things even better!
You can catch the entire first series of The Magicians on Netflix just in time to watch the season two premier January 25, 2017 on SyFy.
